Shopify released its Fall '26 Edition, called Exponential, on October 28, 2026. That's about six weeks earlier than the last two winter releases, so it lands a month before Black Friday.
Shopify announced more than 150 updates. We've narrowed them down to eight that could affect how Plus merchants manage their stores, prepare for Black Friday and sell through AI shopping channels. Some are live now and some are in early access, beta or still rolling out, and we've flagged which. For every past release date, see our Shopify Editions glossary entry.
The 8 changes at a glance
| Change | What it does | Who it affects | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Shop Pay in AI agents | Checkout with Shop Pay inside Claude Duet, Grok Bot, Instinct and Muse, plus Shopify checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini | Brands selling direct | Check which channels are live for your store and market |
| 2. Catalog eligibility check | Shows whether your store qualifies for Shopify Catalog and what to fix | Every brand | Run it and fix what it flags |
| 3. UCP /ask, /buy and WebMCP | Agents query your store's published facts and build carts directly | Every brand, most of all those with custom builds | Fill in and approve the AI knowledge base |
| 4. Bigger Rollouts | One rollout bundles theme, checkout, catalog and discount changes and rolls back automatically | Brands running BFCM promotions | Test a rollout on a smaller sale first |
| 5. Canvas and Sidekick | A whole-store editor, and Sidekick applying several changes after one approval | Theme-based stores | Keep a person approving bulk changes |
| 6. Hydrogen updates | Customer accounts, predictive search, agent skills and one-click Vercel deploys | Headless stores | Review against your current build |
| 7. Fraud, international pricing and AU payments | Shopify Protect (partly rolling out), all-in international prices, Shop Pay Installments in Australia (early access) | International and Australian merchants | Review fraud rules before BFCM |
| 8. Script tags and access tokens | Apps can't create or update script tags, and App Store apps need expiring tokens before January 2027 | Anyone running third-party or custom apps | Ask your app vendors where they stand |
1. Shop Pay checkout inside AI agents
Spring '26 turned on the Universal Commerce Protocol for every store, so AI agents could read catalogs and build carts. Our Spring '26 breakdown covers that release. Fall '26 adds payment. Shopify lists Shop Pay checkout inside Meta's Muse, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct, and checkout powered by Shopify in Google Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app. Orders from Google and Gemini are managed in the Shopify admin like any other order.
Shopify also published shop.md, a skill that lets ChatGPT, Claude or another agent find products, make recommendations and check out with Shop Pay. Shopify says more than a billion products in its catalog can be discovered across AI channels, and more than 400 million shoppers have Shop Pay accounts.
Check Shopify's help docs for which of these channels are live for your store and market before planning around them. The practical consequence for most Plus brands is that more orders can start and finish without a visit to your site, so the product data and policies agents read need to be as accurate as your storefront.
2. Run the Catalog eligibility check this week
This is the most practical change in the release. Shopify added a check that shows whether your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog and what to change to qualify. Products outside the Catalog miss out on most of the AI channel features above.
Eligibility is only the starting point. In our State of AI Visibility study of 2,541 ecommerce brands, the median brand appeared in 1.9% of AI shopping answers for its category. Being able to take an order inside an agent doesn't mean the agent will recommend you.
Three related changes:
- Compare-at prices go to agents. Shopify Catalog now passes your compare-at price to AI shopping agents, so a markdown shows in the answer with no extra setup. Check that your compare-at prices are accurate before Black Friday.
- You approve what agents are told. A new knowledge base lets you review and approve the business details shared with agents, including policies and FAQs, with suggestions on how to improve them. If you leave it empty, agents rely on whatever they find elsewhere.
- Shop Promise ranks higher. Products with the Shop Promise badge, which highlights trusted delivery and returns, now rank higher in search in the Shop app and Shopify Catalog.
Merchandising got two quieter fixes that feed the same system. Product data mapping lets you shape product data per sales channel from the admin and keeps every channel current as the catalog changes. Variants can now carry up to 20 barcodes each, with format validation. Clean identifiers were already the first step in our AI shopping agents checklist. If your catalog needs that work, it's what our agent-ready product data service covers.
3. New UCP endpoints and WebMCP
The developer side of the release matters for Plus brands even if you never read the docs. The Universal Commerce Protocol now has an /ask endpoint that answers questions about a store using facts the business has published, which is the knowledge base above exposed to any agent. A /buy endpoint creates cart and checkout links that carry products, customer details, discounts and order attribution.
WebMCP lets online stores register structured tools that agents call directly to search the catalog, get a product, update a cart and go to checkout.
The Catalog API now also includes products from businesses that aren't on Shopify, in beta. Agents built on Shopify's catalog may show your products next to brands on other platforms. Accurate pricing, availability and product information will matter whichever platform a retailer uses.
4. Bigger Rollouts, in time for Black Friday
Rollouts arrived in Spring '26 for scheduling or A/B testing a theme, checkout configuration or customer accounts setup. Fall '26 widens them. One rollout can now include your theme, checkout configuration, catalogs and discounts. Price and publishing changes can roll out across markets and roll back automatically when the promotion ends. Scheduled changes and A/B tests now reach headless builds, Shopify POS, Google Shopping and the Shop app as well as the online store.
Shopify's own example is a BFCM launch. Black Friday is November 27. If your sale currently depends on someone changing prices, publishing a theme and enabling discounts by hand at midnight, a rollout can do that on a schedule. Test it on a smaller promotion first.
5. Canvas, Sidekick and the new theme architecture
Canvas is a new way to edit the whole online store in one view, working with Sidekick to turn ideas into a custom design. Shopify says it gets stores from no theme to launch 20% faster. Sidekick can now plan and apply several changes at once after one approval, like rewriting descriptions across every product in a collection. It also proposes store improvements it has tested with SimGym, Shopify's shopper simulation app.
Underneath that is a new theme architecture, in developer preview, with blocks, typed contracts, partial updates, Tailwind built in and markdown files that teach Sidekick how your theme is built.
This is useful for theme-based stores and small teams. For Plus brands, I'd use Sidekick to draft bulk changes and keep a person approving them. A change applied across a whole collection takes longer to check and reverse than a single edit.
6. Hydrogen adds customer accounts, search and Vercel deploys
Hydrogen now ships with customer accounts, predictive search, built-in agent skills and one-click deploys to Vercel. Shopify's developer notes say Hydrogen works with any framework and runtime, and Vercel Shop is Vercel's production Next.js template built on the new Hydrogen SDK. Rollouts now reach headless builds too.
We build on Hydrogen, Sanity and Algolia, so read this with that in mind. Headless doesn't make a store better prepared for AI shopping on its own. A theme store with complete, accurate product data is in better shape than a headless build with gaps in it. What these updates do is build in features that used to take custom work on a Hydrogen project.
7. Fraud tools, international pricing and Australian payments
Shopify Protect is a new app for fraud. Shopify says it blocks high-risk orders before payment is authorised, writes AI-generated chargeback responses tailored to the bank and reason code, attaches carrier proof of delivery to disputes, and lets you write and backtest your own fraud rules. Shopify says some of these features are still rolling out, and chargeback protection for orders not paid with Shop Pay is coming soon.
For international sales, Shopify Managed Markets can now show all-in prices with guaranteed duties and taxes and flat-rate shipping. Shopify reports brands saw 50% higher international conversion with Managed Markets. Seven local payment methods were added to Shopify Payments, including Alipay, WeChat Pay and GrabPay.
For Australian merchants, Shop Pay Installments is in early access, and Advanced and Plus stores can now get paid out in more currencies.
8. Script tag and access token changes for apps
Apps can no longer create or update script tags and must move to theme app extensions or web pixels. Shopify's announcement covers creating and updating script tags. It doesn't say existing ones stop working, so this isn't an emergency, but an app that still relies on them can't change that code.
Separately, apps on the Shopify App Store must migrate to expiring access tokens before January 2027 to stay listed. Ask your app vendors whether either change affects them, and check any custom apps with your developer.
What we'd do before Black Friday
- Run the Shopify Catalog eligibility check and fix what it flags.
- Fill in and approve the knowledge base for AI channels. Policies, shipping, returns, sizing, the FAQs you already answer by email.
- Audit compare-at prices and barcodes on your top sellers. Agents now read both.
- Plan your BFCM launch as a rollout, and test it on a small promotion first.
- Ask your app vendors about script tags and expiring tokens.
- Record where your brand stands in AI answers today, so you can measure what changes. Found publishes free weekly lists by category.
If you'd like a second opinion on how ready your store is, our Agentic Commerce Assessment scores it across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews and gives you a prioritised fix list.
