Yes - there are some really good American perfume brands, but I'd separate the genuinely interesting houses from the “Instagram/Sephora hype” brands.
My shortlist, based on originality, perfumery quality, and how consistently good the line is:
### 🇺🇸 The American brands I'd actually spend money on
1. D.S. & Durga - my #1
D.S. & Durga is probably the American house I'd recommend most confidently. It's Brooklyn-based, makes its fragrances in New York, and has a very distinctive artistic identity. www.dsanddurga.comintothegloss.comwww.osmetheca.bearquiste.com
Best ones to try:
- Debaser - green fig, creamy, woody, slightly weird in a very good way
- Radio Bombay - sandalwood/wood, warm and sophisticated
- Bowmakers - dry woods, varnish, violin-shop atmosphere
- I Don't Know What - airy, woody, musky; extremely versatile
- Steamed Rainbow - unusual fresh/green scent
D.S. & Durga is also unusually consistent across its collection; multiple fragrance publications and enthusiasts specifically praise its originality and quality. intothegloss.com
### D.S. & Durga Durga
$380.00

2. Imaginary Authors - best for creativity
Imaginary Authors is one of the most genuinely American niche houses. Josh Meyer composes the fragrances, and every perfume is presented as though it's associated with a fictional book/story. The brand remains based in Portland and independently owned. www.osmetheca.be
Standouts:
- Every Storm a Serenade - salty, woody, atmospheric
- Memoirs of a Trespasser - vanilla + woods
- Saint Julep - mint, bourbon-ish sweetness, Southern atmosphere
- Cape Heartache - pine, strawberry, woods
- Slow Explosions - fruity, leathery, spicy
This is the house I'd pick if you want something that doesn't smell like another designer perfume.
### Imaginary Authors Slow Explosions
$115.00

3. Kerosene - best if you want BIG performance
Kerosene is a Michigan-based indie house and a particularly good place to look if longevity and projection matter to you.
Follow is the obvious starting point: dark coffee, vanilla and amber. It's gourmand without being merely “sweet coffee perfume.”
### Kerosene Follow
$164.00

4. ARQUISTE - best for sophisticated, historical/architectural scents
ARQUISTE Parfumeur is slightly different because founder Carlos Huber is Mexican-born, but the company is American-based and its fragrances are made in the USA. Its whole concept is recreating specific historical moments through scent. arquiste.com
I'd look at Peau, Nanban, The Architects Club, and Flor y Canto.
### ARQUISTE PEAU
$40.00

### And then there's the more accessible tier
PHLUR - genuinely worth sampling, especially if you like modern, clean-ish, sexy skin scents and gourmands. It's more commercial than D.S. & Durga or Imaginary Authors, but some releases are very good.
My picks:
- Vanilla Skin
- Missing Person
- Father Figure
- Tangerine Boy
- Soft Spot
### PHLUR Vanilla Skin
$99.00
### PHLUR Missing Person
$139.00
### PHLUR Father Figure
$99.00
### PHLUR Soft Spot
$99.00
Lake & Skye - another American brand worth knowing, particularly if you like airy, musky, “your skin but better” fragrances. 11 11 is their signature and has a very large following.
Commodity - good if you like the idea of buying one fragrance in different intensities. Some of the line is excellent, particularly Milk, Gold, Moss, and Book. But I personally think D.S. & Durga and Imaginary Authors are more interesting.
