Composable Commerce
Composable commerce is an architecture approach where you assemble your commerce stack from independent, best-of-breed components rather than relying on a single monolithic platform. Each component - commerce engine, CMS, search, payments, OMS - is chosen independently and connected via APIs.
The idea is that no single vendor does everything best. So you pick Shopify for commerce, Sanity for content, Algolia for search, Klaviyo for email, and wire them together. Each piece can be swapped without rebuilding everything else.
In practice, composable commerce on Shopify Plus means going headless - using Shopify as the commerce backend while composing your frontend and content layer from independent services. It delivers flexibility but adds integration complexity and ongoing maintenance. It's the right call for brands with complex content strategies or unique operational requirements, but overkill for most straightforward DTC setups.
Think: best-of-breed everything, wired together — you're not locked into any single vendor's ceiling.
