My recommendation\: If you're choosing just five, start with Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Maker's Mark, Old Forester, and Bardstown Bourbon Company. Together, they offer a great mix of heritage, scenery, production, and modern whiskey craftsmanship.

One important distinction: the best distillery to visit isn't always the one that makes your favorite whiskey. Tours, grounds, tasting quality, and the opportunity to sample limited releases can matter just as much.

If you mean top American whiskey distilleries to visit or buy from, the strongest picks in the search results are Westland in Seattle, Woodford Reserve in Kentucky, Jack Daniel's in Tennessee, Bardstown Bourbon Company in Kentucky, Garrison Brothers in Texas, and Still Austin Whiskey Co. in Texas.

A practical short list by reputation and relevance:

- Westland - singled out as “the single best micro-distillery in the nation” and “the best non-Kentucky/Tennessee/Indiana whiskey in America.” - Woodford Reserve - consistently treated as a must-visit legacy bourbon distillery and one of the best-known American whiskey producers. - Jack Daniel's - one of the classic stops on the American Whiskey Trail and a foundational Tennessee whiskey distillery. - Bardstown Bourbon Company - highlighted for award-winning bourbon and modern bourbon-making credibility. - Garrison Brothers - repeatedly listed among top distilleries, especially for Texas whiskey. - Still Austin Whiskey Co. - noted for its innovative, farm-to-glass approach.

If you want the best overall distilleries, not just the biggest names, Westland and Woodford Reserve have the clearest support in the results for quality and recognition, while Bardstown, Garrison Brothers, and Still Austin stand out for innovation and regional character.
