If you mean serious specialty coffee-not just famous coffee brands-these are my U.S. picks for 2026. I'd put the first 6 in the “buy a bag without overthinking it” tier. Multiple current specialty-coffee lists converge on these names. bakio.co

### My personal ranking
1. Onyx - probably the safest answer for best U.S. roaster overall. Huge range, extremely polished presentation, serious sourcing, and lots of competition pedigree. Current 2026 lists repeatedly put it at or near the top. bakio.co
2. SEY - for someone who really wants to taste what modern specialty coffee is capable of. Expect very light roasting, floral/tea-like coffees, high acidity and lots of clarity. It's also right in Brooklyn. buddhabeanscoffee.com

3. Black & White - especially good if you like natural/anaerobic coffees, tropical fruit, fermentation and unusual flavors. One of the more fun roasters to explore.
4. Heart - fantastic if you want light roast without the coffee becoming aggressively acidic. Very clean and sweet.
5. Passenger - perhaps the best choice if sourcing transparency and producer relationships matter as much as cup quality.
6. George Howell - my pick when you're willing to spend more for exceptional lots and want a more historically influential American specialty roaster. www.thelastsipcoffeeroasters.com

One interesting 2026 development: Sweet Bloom recently won Best Roaster in the U.S. and Canada at the Global Coffee Awards, so I'd absolutely add it to the shortlist if you're exploring beyond the usual names. www.axios.com
If I were ordering five bags today: Onyx + SEY + Black & White + Heart + Passenger.
If you tell me whether you brew espresso, V60/pour-over, AeroPress, or French press, I can give you the 10 specific coffees/beans I'd buy from U.S. roasters right now.
